Maybe You Just Need a Hobby

Morning Glory by Danielle Mckinney

We’re all busy. Uni, work, social plans, deadlines and way too much time on our phones. When we finally get a free evening, we usually end up scrolling TikTok for two hours and wondering where the time went.

Maybe we don’t need another productivity hack. Maybe we just need a hobby.

Having a hobby gives you something to do that isn’t about work, studying or being online. It doesn’t have to be impressive either. You don’t need to make money from it or become amazing at it. You just need to enjoy it.

And the best part? It can be really simple.

You could start by learning about something you’re genuinely curious about. Pick a random topic and Google it. Maybe you want to know more about psychology, fashion history, astrology or how your favourite celebrity became famous. Let yourself go down the rabbit hole.

Save interesting facts in your phone, write down things you didn’t know or keep a list of questions you want to look up next. It’s an easy way to learn something new without it feeling like studying.

If you want something creative, try drawing, painting or colouring. You don’t have to be artistic. Follow a TikTok tutorial, doodle while listening to music or grab a cheap colouring book. The point isn’t to create a masterpiece. It’s just something to focus on for a while.

Photography is another easy one. You already have everything you need on your phone. Take photos of your coffee, your outfit, sunsets, your friends or anything that catches your eye. It can make everyday life feel a little more interesting.

You could bake something you’ve saved on TikTok, make a new playlist or go for a walk somewhere you’ve never been before. Small things can still be hobbies.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Productive

We’re constantly told to improve ourselves, learn new skills and turn our interests into side hustles. But not everything needs to become something.

You can research a completely random topic just because you’re curious. You can take photos you never post. You can bake something just because you fancy it. You can spend an hour making a playlist that only you will ever listen to.

Sometimes wellness is simply having something to look forward to.

So try something new. Spend twenty minutes doing something that makes you curious or happy.

You might just find your new favourite thing.
